About the Program
Since 2007, the School of Public Affairs and the Center for Civil Society has offered executive education courses designed especially for nonprofit leaders in Southern California. The program has evolved from the Center for Civil Society’s ongoing research of the region’s nonprofit sector over the last five years.

The Nonprofit Leadership Program takes place over intensive two-day sessions during which faculty participants address key governance and management issues from different perspectives

Peer-learning
Drawing on the research and course offerings of the UCLA faculty, the Nonprofit Leadership Program is designed to integrate conceptual knowledge with case studies and participant experiences to generate both powerful and practical insights about leadership and management.

The Program will utilize lectures as well as experiential, peer-based learning. Group discussions focus on case studies that present actual challenges that nonprofit managers and leaders in Southern California have faced. Participants will be asked to work in teams and to take on the role of decision-makers to consider policy options and decisions retrospectively. These case studies will be supplemented by relevant literature and other material. The sessions are designed for nonprofit leaders who want to develop a richer understanding of the sector, who seek a deeper appreciation of the nonprofit manager’s perspective on mission and practice and who are open to developing and learning from a network of their peers. Much of the focus will be on the adaptive challenges that nonprofit leaders face.

The two-day intensive seminars will be geared toward experienced nonprofit chief executive officers, or senior level staff who will be moving into a leadership position. In addition, several topics - leadership and sustainability; vision, mission and goal; and strategic planning - may be useful for the joint participation of the Executive Director and the Board Chair/Board Member.
