Lianne Urada is a doctoral student at UCLA in the
Department of Social Welfare, School of Public Affairs. She is a
native of Los Angeles, but is an avid world traveler, who has visited
twenty-five countries, spanning five continents. As a former graduate
student of UCLA’s Master’s program in Social Welfare, she spent six
months in a red light district in the Philippines, counseling street
children and Commercial Sex Workers. This led her to work for eight
years in the non-profit sector with clients living with HIV/AIDS. She
also took a job with the U.S. Agency for International Development
West Coast office, which has inspired her to analyze U.S. foreign aid
policy and its impact on developing nations. For the past three years,
she was a UCLA Social Welfare Field Faculty member, and initiated
internships in Africa, Asia, and Central America. She currently does
research and training for the UCLA Center on Child Welfare.
