MPP APPLICATION FOR FALL 2010

Deadline for Application & Fellowship: January 10, 2010

*Please note, both the UCLA and Public Policy Department Online applications must be completed by the deadline.

*As much as possible, please submit all application materials in one single packet postmarked by the deadline.  However, we will accept reference letters, transcripts, and official GRE scores sent separately.

UCLA MPP Application Checklist for Fall 2010

An applicant submits the online Application for Graduate Admission and the $70 (for U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents) or $90.00 (for all other applicants) application fee to Graduate Admissions/Student and Academic Affairs. The applicant's information then becomes available online to the graduate program. The applicant submits transcripts, supplementary information, department-specific material, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation directly to the graduate program.

The Graduate Division application is available on-line at:
www.gdnet.ucla.edu Click on on-line application. Make sure that you record your password and Applicant ID# for verification.

You DO NOT need to print-out Supplemental forms on the Graduate Division web site. Download the MPP specific forms linked in PDF format in the highlighted links on this checklist below. You can pay the application fee via credit card or by mailing a check. To insure that your application materials are properly routed, it is important that you use the correct UC major code on your application to the Graduate Division and the correct GRE institution and department codes on your GRE registration materials. The UC major code for Public Policy is 790; the GRE institution code for UCLA is R4837; the GRE department code for Public Policy is 1903.

The Department MPP Supplemental Application is also on-line. These are the questions that are on the application. Check the questions so that you will have the materials ready for completing the MPP Supplemental Application.

Official Transcripts
Mail two sets of official transcripts for each institution attended. Use the PDF transcript request form.
 
GRE Scores
Request that ETS forward your official GRE scores earned within the last five years. (Submit a photocopy of your copy of the GRE scores. This will save time, just in case ETS sends the official scores to the wrong department). The Institution Code for UCLA is 4837 and the Department code is 1903.
 
Statement of Purpose (SOP)
Write a Statement of Purpose describing your background, interest, and qualifications for the MPP program. If you use more than one page for your statement be sure to number the pages and include your name on each page. Your SOP should not be longer than 3 double-spaced pages or approximately 750 words. (No need to complete the cover form for your SOP that is on the Graduate Division Web site. The information requested on this form should be in your SOP or on your resume or CV.)
 
Three Letters of Recommendation
These letters should be from former professors or professional references. Complete the top part of the cover form for Letter of Recommendation and give it to your recommenders. Ask your references to write their letter on letterhead stationary, and remind them that the cover form needs to accompany their letter.

Fellowship Application (if applicable)
The fellowship application is part of the Graduate Division Application. The Department's January 10th deadline will supersedes the December 15th fellowship deadline indicated on the Graduate Division web site. If you did not complete the fellowship application, you may complete the form available on-line at www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/entsup/finsup.htm
Then print-out the fellowship application and return to our department.
Submit any supporting information for your fellowship application to the department. Many fellowships have particular criteria. Indicate how you meet the specific criteria on a separate sheet of paper for each fellowship for which you apply. You may not have enough room on the Graduate Division application to indicate all your qualifications. The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (TITLE VI) requires an additional statement of purpose addressing prior language training and a language evaluation from a faculty member relating to the proposed language of study. The Diversity Fellowship requires a separate application.

Confidential Financial Statement (for international applicants only)
**Please do not staple any of the paperwork you mail to us, (especially your Statement of Purpose and Resume) as we usually have to make additional copies. If possible, try to send most of your paperwork at the same time in one envelope.
