The applications for admission can be accessed online beginning
October 2009; there is no paper copy. The application process
for the UCLA Department of Urban Planning is comprised of two parts. Part One is designed for submission of basic information
to the UCLA Graduate Division, including your academic history and the
degree program to which you want to apply, as well as the application
fee. Part Two of the application process involves the submission
directly to our program of the following items: Department of Urban Planning
application, statement of purpose, resume, supplementary information,
letters of recommendation, transcripts, samples of written work, and GRE
scores.
Deadlines:
For Ph.D. admissions and Master's Fellowship consideration: December
15, 2009
For Master's admissions, no Fellowship consideration: January
15, 2010
UCLA Application for Graduate Admission 2010-11.
Complete the Graduate Division application. Go to the Graduate Division
application website at www.gradadmissions.ucla.edu/newapp,
and click “Register On Our Site”. Follow the instructions.
You do not have to complete it all at one time. You can save the application
and submit it when you have all the necessary information. Once you start
the application you will be assigned a password for retrieval and verification.
To insure that your application is properly routed, it is important
that you use the correct UCLA Urban Planning major code (911)
on your application to the Graduate Division.
Current UCLA Urban Planning Master's students who are applying to the
Ph.D. program, and current UCLA Architecture or Latin American Studies
master's students who are applying to join the concurrent degree program,
should not submit the Graduate Division application.
$70 Application Fee ($90 for international applicants).
You can pay the application fee by credit card online (highly recommended)
or by mailing a check to: Remittance Processing Center, 10920 Wilshire
Blvd. Suite 107, Los Angeles, CA 90024. Make the check payable to
The Regents of the University of California and write your email
address and your applicant ID number on the check.
After submitting the application and fee
to the UCLA Graduate Division, you must submit the following materials
directly to the Department of Urban Planning.

Please mail all admissions materials together, including transcripts
and recommendation letters in sealed envelopes.

Statement of Purpose (cover sheet and prompt: www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gasaa/library/stmtpurp.pdf).
The statement of purpose should be no longer than three pages. It should
include a concise description of past and present education and employment
experiences and how these experiences have led to the choice of urban
planning as a career objective, as well as the reasons for seeking admittance
to UCLA's Urban Planning program. Please also refer and respond to the
prompt illustrated by the UCLA Graduate Division, which can be found in
the above link.
Note: Applicants to the Ph.D. program are required to submit TWO statements
of purpose—the second statement should describe the applicant’s
intended area of concentration, specific areas of interest in planning,
including research interests, and current plans for the dissertation.
Ph.D. applicants should also include the names of UCLA faculty with whom
they would like to work.
Current Resume. Relevant planning-related experience is highly recommended.

This form requires you to list the names of persons from whom you have
requested letters of recommendation. If you are currently attending a
college or university, the form requires you to list any coursework in
progress.

Complete the top part of this form and give it to your letter writers.
Ask your references to write their letter on letterhead stationery, and
remind them that the cover form needs to accompany their letter.
Two Sets of Official Transcripts (optional request form: www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gasaa/library/trnscrpt.pdf).
We require transcripts from all institutions where you have completed
college or graduate level coursework. Be sure to indicate Urban Planning
as the Proposed Major at UCLA on your transcript request form.
Official GRE Scores.
GRE scores (from the last five years) are required for all applicants.
Be sure to indicate the correct GRE institution (R4837)
and department (4402) codes on your GRE registration
materials.
Work Sample (Optional for Master's applicants; required for Ph.D.
applicants).
Preferably research papers and/or a copy of the master’s thesis
are required of doctoral applicants. Work samples such as reports, research
papers, etc., are optional for applicants to the master's program. No
more than two samples should be submitted, and work in a language other
than English will not be considered. Samples must be in hard copy. Do
not send CDs.
TOEFL Scores (For international applicants only).
The minimum score required is 600 paper-based/250 computer-based/100 internet-based.
The TOEFL institution code for UCLA is 4837 and the department code is
97. If you have completed or are enrolled in a minimum two-year degree
program in an English-speaking country, the TOEFL is not required.

Complete the form if you will need an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility
for an F-1 student visa or an IAP-66 Certificate of Eligibility for a
J-1 exchange visitor visa. Signature and bank stamps must be included
to validate the form. This form must be received before your application
for admission will be reviewed.
