Visiting Affiliates Program

The Department of Urban Planning is continuing its research exchange agreement with China’s leading urban planning agency, the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD). Under this agreement the Department of Urban Planning hosted ten managers and senior staff from CAUPD last year and is hosting seven this year. These visiting affiliates are attending courses on physical planning and urban design and auditing and participating in other classes offered by the UCLA Department of Urban Planning. Faculty mentors meet regularly with the affiliates to discuss issues related to their course of study at UCLA.

This year’s class of affiliates includes: Chen Zhanshi, Gao Shiming, Guo Lei, Li Quanyu, Shang Jing, Zhang Fan and Zhao Xia. Vinit Mukhija, Neal Richman and Brian Taylor are this year’s faculty mentors.

It is our intention that this relationship between the professional and academic planning communities of UCLA and CAUPD and between China and the United States will be a long and productive collaboration.

Internships

This past summer marked the third year that the CAUPD has provided scholarships for Urban Planning MA students to work in China. Students are selected to work in Beijing with the staff of the CAUPD for up to three months between June and December and they may travel elsewhere in China depending on the projects they work on. Projects may be in developed or undeveloped regions of China, in a metropolis or small town, including rural areas. The country has about 100 cities with populations over a million, all growing and transforming rapidly. The students may earn independent study course credit and room and board is provided by the CAUPD.

Urban Planning students who have participated in this program include:

  • Lara Regus, Ava Bromberg, Sara Slovin, Matthew Dresden, and Quinn Tang (summer 2006)
  • Peter Capone-Newton, Kennetha Gaines, Guillermo Jaimes and Andrea Osgood (summer 2007)
  • Christopher Gladora, Rebecca Choi, Charlotte Burger, and Georgia Sheridan (summer 2008)
