Urban Planning Professor Susanna Hecht, a specialist on tropical history, development and land use, has documented the role of soy expansion in Amazonian development in Bolivia and Brazil. Her recent article "How Brazil Outfarmed the American Farmer" which appeared in Fortune Magazine and was recently posted on CNNmoney.com, has inspired a section of a 5-part series under production by BBC Scotland called Jimmy's Global Farm. The BBC series will look at food production and the challenges faced by the global food system. As a result of reading Hecht's article in Fortune, the BBC has arranged to film the soy harvest at Blairo Maggi's farm and follow the trail to Porto Velho to film the soy being loaded for export . The full text of Hecht's article is available at CNNmoney.com
