New Book by Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris on Sidewalks: Conflict and Negotiation Over Public Space
Posted on May 18, 2009

The MIT Press has just published a new book by Urban Planning Professor Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris entitled Sidewalks: Conflict and Negotiation over Public Space. The book is co-authored with Renia Ehrenfeucht (Ph.D., UCLA, 2005), Assistant Professor at the University of New Orleans.

Drawing on historical and contemporary examples as well as case study research and archival data, the book details how the functions and meanings of street activities have shifted and have been negotiated through controls and interventions. The book traces the conflicts that have arisen over competing social uses on public sidewalks and demonstrates how sidewalks are contested sites where the micropolitics of everyday life are displayed.

More information on the book is available on the MIT Press website.

Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris was featured in a recent issue of UCLA Today answering 10 questions about the book.
