2009 Award for Overall Excellence Goes to Sabrina Bornstein
Posted on June 25, 2009

Sabrina Bornstein is the recipient of the 2009 Urban Planning Award for Overall Excellence. The award is presented at commencement to an outstanding graduating MA student.

Sabrina received her B.A. in Urban Studies from Stanford and spent several years in the community development field working for the National Economic Development and Law Center in Oakland, Habitat for Humanity in New York City, and the Concord Group in San Francisco, prior to entering our MA program.

Sabrina was characterized by urban planning faculty member Goetz Wolff as a model of the ideal urban planning student. Motivated by a huge curiosity to investigate complex economic and institutional processes, Sabrina is an indefatigable researcher who goes far beyond what is "required." She is a thoughtful analyst of complex political-economic processes who is motivated by a deep concern with issues of social justice.

Sabrina's client project (with CRA/LA, where she is an intern), titled "Solar PV Product Manufacturing" seeks to understand the potential for solar manufacturing in Los Angeles. Rather than simply endorsing a popular green topic, she carefully examined the assumptions and the data which resulted in a sober assessment that will lead to policies grounded in understanding, rather than wishful thinking.

Ultimately, planners must work with people and Sabrina is a vivacious and charming individual whose enthusiam generates energy and productivity from her fellow teammates. Sabrina's combination of intellect, drive, passion, commitment, and charisma assure that she will become a leader in the field.

Sabrina has accepted a position as a research/policy analyst at LAANE [Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy] where she will research the waste and recycling industry in the LA County region.
