Val Zavala, Veteran Journalists to Hold Panel on “Real News” Jan. 24

Val Zavala, anchor of KCET’s Life and Times, and Vice President of News and Public Affairs for the Los Angeles-based station, will join award-winning journalists Philip Bruce and Conan Nolan for a discussion on how the media cover social and policy issues. Zavala also is a Senior Fellow at the UCLA School of Public Affairs.

The discussion, “Missing: Real News – How Social and Policy Issues are Covered by the Media,” is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the UCLA School of Public Affairs (room 2355) on the UCLA campus. The panelists will focus on how important social, policy, and urban planning issues become topics for broadcast news and how they are reported in the media.

Val Zavala, joined KCET as a reporter/anchor in 1987. Since then, she has served as reporter, co-host, documentary producer and executive producer. Her work has garnered ten L. A. Area Emmy Awards, six Golden Mikes, and the “Avance” award from Hispanic Americans for Fairness in Media honoring journalists for longevity and integrity in broadcasting. She was also named one of the hundred most influential Latinos by Hispanic Business Magazine (2006).

Philip Bruce is an Emmy Award winning journalist & Deputy General Manager, National Public Radio -- western headquarters (NPR WEST).

Conan Nolan also is an Emmy Award winning reporter for NBC4’s “Channel 4 News” & Host of NBC4’s “News Conference.”
