Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr., Dean of the UCLA School of Public Affairs, was a delegate at the first Stonehouse Summit held in January in British Columbia. Gilliam was among a group of scientists, writers, activists, and experts in business, policy, media and public relations gathered to “brainstorm on promising practical and broadly applicable methods to achieve public engagement and inspire political action,” on environmental issues.
Gilliam and delegates were invited by award winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster, Dr. David Suzuki, chair of the Suzuki Foundation, to attend the foundation’s first summit. Suzuki, a geneticist and world leader in sustainable ecology, is well-known for his PBS series “The Secret of Life” and his Discovery Channel series “The Brain.”
The group focused on the British Columbia carbon tax, using it as a case study during three-day gathering. The goal of the summit is to “share our thinking freely with all individuals and organizations that are committed to creating a robust economy,” said Suzuki.
