Dean of UCLA School of Public Affairs Moderates United Way Corporate Philanthropy Summit

Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr., Dean of the UCLA School of Public Affairs, moderated the United Way of Greater Los Angeles 2009 Corporate Philanthropy Summit held Feb. 3.

Invited participants in the summit titled, "A Kitchen Table Conversation, Fighting Poverty in Tough Times," included keynote speaker Henry Cisneros, Executive Chairman, CityView and former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

The list of panelists for the "Kitchen Table" discussion included: Elise Buik, President and CEO, United Way of Greater Los Angeles; Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; Janet Lamkin, President, Bank of America California; and, Tim Leiweke, President and CEO, Anshutz Entertainment Group. Elise Buik provided the opening and closing remarks.

Gilliam, who also holds appointments in Public Policy and Political Science at UCLA, was among a select group of prominent business and community leaders gathered to discuss strategies that community businesses are using to combat poverty while strengthening their businesses in the current economic environment.
